I’ve just finished some updates to Good Food on a Budget, then got inspired to do this post when I spotted some Hot Cross Muffin (Buffin) recipes. Easier than Hot Cross Buns, and also easier to make gluten free, paleo or keto. So here’s a selection of various baking recipes, some Easter drinks, some home made chocolates and alternatives, and other egg ideas.
There are three recipes for Anzac biscuits – Edmonds version, Ceres Organics spelt version and GF version – towards the bottom of our Baking page.
Hot Cross Buns
Traditional Hot Cross Buns are made with yeast, and need to be allowed to rise.

Hot Cross Muffins & Scones
Hot Cross Bun Muffins (or Buffins) are muffins made with Hot Cross Bun spices and flavourings, but are much quicker to make.

Not Cross Buns
A term I just made up to describe baked goods that have somewhat different flavour profiles, but are a bit related, such as Orange muffins. (Though as it turns out, the term has been used before, for Hot Cross style buns that have ticks or smiles on top instead.) These would be helpful if you don’t like spice or raisins. Or add some raisins if it’s just the spice you don’t like.
- Orange Cranberry Muffins – I like these for Xmas, but they could be a good Easter substitute:
- Nigella Lawson original recipe – uses standard flour
- Coconut flour version
- Almond flour version
- GF Orange Muffins – made with oat and coconut flour (so only GF if you know the oats were certified GF)
- Paleo Orange Muffins – nut-free, dairy-free, coconut-free
- A range of HCB alternatives, including scones, cookies and gin! – plus use up your leftover HCBs and make trifle or brownies.
- Another collection – includes Lemon-blueberry hot cross bread and butter pudding, Raspberry and chocolate hot cross bun pudding, French Toast HCB fingers, Creme Brulee, Chocolate-filled hot cross buns, and more.
- A list of alternatives to raisins
